During early archery season, there's nothing like a quick visit up to Conrad and Linda Wygant's elk camp up off Cochetopa Pass. Don, Sherril, Annee, and I took off on Conrad's change over day a few weeks back to visit up and see how the season was going. When we arrived, Linda was in Gunnison shopping and doing the weeks laundry, while Luke, one of the guides, was picking up new hunters coming out for muzzleloading season.
Elk Camp We found Conrad and son Tommy lazing around camp waiting for us to show. No sooner than we all got our how dos said, Sherril and Annee took off back to Gunnison to catch up with Linda.
Miss Linda's Kitchin Pretty quick, Luke showed up with only one hunter from Maine. The other two from Michigan had called to cancel due to one of them supposedly having a bad back. Maybe they had second thoughts about the rigors of following Conrad around the mountains all day at 11,000'. Luke and Tommy got the one hunter settled in the bunk house, then took him out for some practice shots.
Playin' Cards Don and I hung out with Conrad just to BS. After a bit, the boys came back and it seemed as tho the hunter's new muzzle shooter was fouled and inoperable, so they loaded him up in the trash truck loaded with a week's worth of camp trash and headed for Gunnison to get a new gun. Looked like this was turning into an expensive hunt for the gunner.
Waitin' for the Outhouse Not too long after, the gals showed with groceries and Conrad and Linda insisted we stay for an early dinner. Conrad's camp is know as CONRAD'S HIGH COUNTRY OUTFITTERS http://www.conradsoutfitters.com/, but, if you've ever eaten there, you know if should be called LINDA'S HIGH COUNTRY KITCHEN. You will never eat better in your lifetime!!! All too quickly, dinner was done and with dark approaching we took off on the return trip to MONTROSE after a great visit with our frens. Sadly, we probably wont get to see them now til all elk and deer seasons are done. |
