Turkey George

The last week of turkey season I was expecting good friend and Arkansas hillbilly George Peters to drive out to join me and CCC in chasing gobblers over the Uncompaghre. George is a genuine Ozark turkey hunter who has held the Arkansas turkey calling champeenship 6 times. CCC [Conrad] is a master Colorado turkey caller, so it would be fun to see what happened when Turkey George met up with CCC and we had dueling callers.

Annee & George

After 2 days driving, George pulled in on Sunday with his trusty Honda 4-wheeler load up on his Chevy. Annee thoroughly enjoyed giving Pete the Hacienda tour since he was a home builder his own self, and she continually picked his brain for compliments. After the tour ole George were duly impressed.

Conrad & Turkey George

Early up by 2:30 next AM, Conrad hooked up to my trailer with George's and my 4 wheeler loaded, and we headed to the turkey woods. Just out of Montrose, George started to fidget and fuss and cuss. Seemed he had forgotten the keys to his 4 wheeler and it looked like he and mw would be riding double that day. What a first and lasting impression that made on Conrad. Looked like Turkey George had a lot to make up for.

Snowed Out

That day we covered a lot of ground but heard no birds. Next day it was minus freezing before daybust, and George was riding his own machine. Wind blew hard and pretty quiklike it started snowing. 'Fore we new it the snow turned to a sideto blizzard, so we hightailed it out to keep from getting stranded.

Froze Up

The third day we missed our best chance at a long tom About mid day we heard a gobbler and eased in as close as we could to set up. Conrad started calling and a gobbler and two jakes snuck in on us. George and I were hunkered under some oaks about 40' apart and Brer gobbler and his jakes walked right in on us. Unfortunately we couldn't see them for the brush until they were spooked and running.

Lunch

The last day we covered 60+ miles cross country, heard a few birds, but had no luck. Such is turkey hunting. Oh well, better luck next year! Next day George was off for Little Rock where they spoke his language. Hopefully he'll come back next spring and bring his Darlin' Diane!!
