Last year Plum and Jeff Flint and I made a road trip to Lincoln to see the Hokies play the Huskers. The fans there were so nice [inspite of the Hokies win] that I didnt want to miss the return match scheduled for September. So I planned a 10 day visit back to VA, while Lil Annee chose to stay here on the home front. AS usual my visits are full visiting friends and family, but on Friday before game day, Robert & I headed to Blacksburg.
With Aubrey & Mary Way back in the early 60s where I was in Blacksburg, I bow hunted regularly with a good friend, Aubrey Mills, who worked in the faculty dining hall. He always kept our apartment stocked up with cakes, pies, & steaks. Hadnt see ole Aubrey since ’65, so I determined to look him up if he was still kicking. Stopped by to see him and we spent an hour talking about ole times. Hes pushing 85 now and gathered a few gray hairs, but still that outgoing full of life Aubrey I knew 44 years ago.
Welcome Huskers! Ole fren John Montague and his new lovely Jean let us stay in Jeans empty condo for the weekend and Rd & I wandered downtown B-Burg Friday nite for dinner and joined the throng of Hokie & Husker fans. Saturday we were up and around town wandering and shoping for tailgate goodies. By noon we had joined the Lipscombs and Lees from Culpepper and set up for the tailgate party.
With Husker Fans The great part about tailgating, other than the food is to wander the huge parking lots seeing old frens and making new frens. And, 2 hours before kickoff taking in the teams parade during the walk into the stadium.

The Parade
Ready to Play After 3 hours or so of partying outside, it was time to join the Flints inside for the game. The teams finished their warmups and the Hokies made their grand entrance to the racous “Enter Sandman” while the stadium went wild. Three Airforce F-18s made a flyover at the end of the National Anthem and the game kicked off with VT taking the first score.
Flyover
VT Scores First The game was a defensive struggle and close throughout. One of the nice things about the TV timeouts is that there are always a couple of cute gals close by that like to hug on an ole feller like me. By the end of the 4th quarter the Huskers were up by two and it looked like they would avenge the loss to the Hokies last year. But----with time running out Tyrod tossed an 80 yd bomb to Danny Coale to put the Hokies on the three. Two plays later Tyrod possed a touchdown with time running out to snatch victory from sure defeat. Hellofagame!
Hugs from Laura and Jill Marie After the game lots of celebrating was done at the tailgate and we retired the the Lipscomb -Lee home to watch the late games. Next day Robert & I headed on to Roanoke to visit up with young Dee who is going to school to finish his degree and working at Hotel Roanoke. Great to see my eldest after way too long.
Pop & DEE
Pop and RD On the way back to Richmond we stopped at the Equine Center in Lexington to visit up with the TT Hydes, where young Ellie was garnering all kinds of ribbons in the state 4H horseshow.
Hyde Trophies Pretty quick my trip had run its course. The last nite there I joined the vast Mugford tribe for dinner to celebrate young Peytons birthday. Next day I was off to the mountains of Colorado after a great visit. Thanks to Del 7 Wendy for putting me up in grand style.
The Mug Tribe I got to get back later over Thanksgiving to attend the VT-NC State game, as well as the VT-VA final game [ both won by the Hokies] but unfortunately I didnt have my camera. Next up for the Hokies is a duel with Tennessee in the Chick Fila Bowl. Go Hokies! |
