Stock Show & Rodeo

After leaving Cameron, Pat and I headed down to Plumís in Sequin, Tx for three days of sightseeing, stock show, rodeo, and the Alan Jackson concert. Sara and Plum had been in Seguin for a bit over a year, and I had yet to meet young Will , who is my godson. At first he wasnít too sure about these two strangers, but pretty quick he warmed to us. After three long hunting days, we settled for a quick dinner at the Clear Springs Catfish House and called it a nite.

Next AM we followed Plum into San Antonio for a tour of his warehouse, then Pat and I road downtown for a tour of the Alamo. Back in March 1836 Texians and Tejano defenders were outnumbered and overun by General Santa Anna, but the defeat gave Sam Houston time to regroup and ultimately defeat Santa Anna. The Alamo remains today hallowed ground and the shrine of Texas independence.

The Alamo Memorial

While taking pictures outside the Alamo, Pat and I were approached by a gentleman who explained that his daughter had been visiting for a week and had gotten no pictures of cowboys and they wanted to have her picture taken with us. We explained we were visiting from Colorado and not Texas cowboys, but I think she was more interested in two good looking guys in Resistols.

After two hours touring the Alamo, we headed over for a tour of the River Walk and a boat ride on the San Antonio River thru town. We hit Hard Rock Cafe for lunch, then stopped in Coyote Ugly for a picture with one of the gals who dance on the bar. The PM was spent out at the Stock Show checking out the livestock and watching the barrel racers perform.

That nite we all ate Mexican at Mamacitas, then headed off to COWBOYS, the biggest darn honkey tonk dancehall I ever set foot in. The building itself had to be at least an acre under roof, with a dance floor about one quarter the size of a football field. And, one portion of the building housed an indoor rodeo arena where they had live bull riding each weekend.

Cowboys

The first section of bull riding started at 8PM so we all got a drink and watched some great and not so great rides. After section one concluded, the house band got cranked up and we moved over to the dancehall side. I was wishing Lil Annee was there so we could dance when a cute lil blond cowgal tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to two step. Sure, you betcha says I and away we went. After that it was nonstop dancing with gals lined up two deep. Bout wore me out! Still wish Annee had been there! We stayed for section two of the bulls and more dancing after that. I was whupped by the time we got home!

Ready for Bull Riding

Saturday we visited Gruene a restored ole cotton town and The Gruene Hall an 1878 dancehall, where George Strait and many other country stars had played. The rest of the day was spent watching ranch cutting at the Stock Show, the PRCA rodeo, and finally capping the day off with the Alan Jackson concert.

At Gruene, TX

Early AM we were on the long road back to Colorado, where we got sidetracked in Raton by a snow storm. The weatherman said we had a 6 hr clear window next AM before a following strorm hit, and we were able to make Montrose just in time. It had been a hellofa road trip and we are looking to do it all again next year.
