Back last fall , I bought a weekend package in Moab, UT. for Lil Annee's birthday at the annual black tie event for the Montrose Boys & Girls Club. After celebrating her birthday on April 29, we headed over to Moab for a weekend in mid May.
Annee Off thru Grand Junction we went, turning cross country about 30 miles into Utah down to run parallel with the Colorado River thru the canyons down to Moab. The river was in full spate and full of rafts running the white water. The canyons coming into the river were gorgeous and exceptionally green from all the winter moisture.
Dee We pulled into Moab about noon and checked into the Arches Hotel after a quick brew pub lunch. After settling into our room we headed out to The Arches National Park for an afternoon of sightseeing and hiking in some of the most spectacular country I've ever seen.
At Window Rocks I dropped Annee off at a 3 mile trailhead and drove around to the lower end of the trail to pick her up. Then we drove over to the Window Rocks and took a 2 mile hike around the area marveling at the geological formations, We finished up the afternoon driving the rest of the park and headed back to the hotel for a hot tub & swim before a nite on the town.
Dee @ An Arch Next AM we were up and off early to explore Dead Horse Point State Park, where legend had it that way back yonder some cowboys rounded up a herd of wild horses and †built a brush fence corralling them in on a solitary point. Unfortunately the point had no water available and before the cowboys could move the horses, they all died of thirst, hence the name of the park.
Annee the Dwarf We parked the car and took a 3 hour hike around the huge point that offered spectacular views of the Colorado River as it wound it's way thru the canyons. At one point we overlooked the area where part of the movie "Thelma and Louise" was filmed.
At Dead Horse Point Then it was over to Canyonlands National Park where we first stopped for a picnic lunch. The rest of the afternoon was taken up with 3 different 2 mile hikes down off the rim into some of the most beautiful scenery you can imagine. By late afternoon we were pooped to say the least, so we headed to the hotel for an extended hot tub and swin to wind down. That nite we again hit the town with an exceptional dinner at the Sundown Restaurant and a walk around town. Next AM we hit the road for home, heading south out of town, then around south of the LaSal Mtns, back into Colorado and the west end of Montrose County to home. Moab proved to be a quaint mountain town that caters to bikers, hikers, 4 wheelers, and river runners. Next time we intend to take our 4 wheeler with us to explore and even take a run down the Colorado. If you ever get the chance to visit Moab, we highly recommend at least a 2 day visit.
